What's the Good NewsWeek #13Quest Girls at Raleigh/Final Four Showcase: The Quest girls sent three teams to Raleigh, NC for the CASL/Adidas Final Four Showcase, and came home with a 6-2-1 record. This event is set up in a showcase format where teams play three games over three days. The schedule is set so that all the players, parents and coaches can go see the NCAA D1 Final Four games as part of the event. The Quest teams played some great soccer in some cold conditions, but managed to have lots of fun! The 85 Reds (U18) started the weekend off with a tough first match against Real Colorado out of Denver. After going up 2-0 in the first half, the Quest saw Real fight back in the second half to get the game even at 2-2. The 85s capitalized on a late corner kick after bombing the Real goal for the last 15 minutes of the game. The game ended 3-2 Quest. The second match was against the Medford Rage from New Jersey. The 85s dominated this match from start to finish scoring 4 nice goals and only seeing their goal keeper touch the ball half a dozen times. The last match for the 85s was against FC Delco out of Philly. This was a great game that saw Quest once again dominate possession and finish 2 nice goals and create a dozen other chances&ldots; The game ended 2-0 Quest. The 85s have 12 of their 16 players that have verbally committed to colleges to play soccer, while the remaining 4 players are narrowing their options and are closing in on their final decisions. Great weekend for the 85s with no time to rest as they have Disney over the end of December and State Cup in January. Although the 85s have already qualified for Regionals, they are obligated to compete in the state cup. The 86 Reds (U17) had a great weekend at Raleigh. They played some great soccer against some tough competition. The girls started the weekend off by playing Metro United out of Illinois. Quest dominated defensively and created many scoring chances as they were able to keep possession throughout the game. The defensive unit was able to keep the clean sheet only allowing 5 shots on goal as Quest prevailed 2-0. The next game saw Quest pitted against Lakeland out of Florida. It was a very evenly matched game where Quest saw more of the scoring chances. Unfortunately, none of the chances were converted and Lakeland capitalized on its only free kick of the game and came away with the 1-0 victory. Again, the defending and goal keeping in this game was superb. The last game of the week end was against the Greensboro Twisters. Quest played some great soccer but fell to this opponent 1-0. The Twisters scored from a corner kick that danced inside the 18 before being deflected into the goal. Overall, it was a great week end of soccer and the girls caught the eyes of many college coaches. The 88 Reds also had a tough opponent for their U15 first match in Ohio Elite. The Quest girls dominated play scoring a very nice goal and created many chances but could not finish the other opportunities. This caught up with the 88s late in the game when Ohio Elites keeper came way out and cleared a ball in behind the Quest defenders and a forward ran onto it and beat the keeper. The game ended 1-1. In the second game for the 88s, Quest met the TSC Thunder. Quest had most of the play and scored two good goals but TSC kept battling and scrapped a late goal but the game ended 2-1 Quest. The final match for the 88s was against TFC Navy out of Cary NC. These teams have had some battles over the years, and this was no different. In a hard fought match, the 88s created a number of dangerous attacks and only finished one but that would be all it would take this day. Final was 1-0 and that put the 88s at 2-0-1 for the event. Great weekend for the 88s and some time off for the holidays. Improvements to United SoccerOver the past 3 years, we have made subtle changes to the Canterbury Park complex. Some of our improvements have been:
Offsite we have installed a sprinkler system and sowed bermuda grass at Kell High School. In exchange for field use. We continue to make improvements to better serve our membership. GO QUEST !Week #12On the girls side, the Fall season wrapped up with the Academies at tournaments. The U10s played in the Sugar and Spice tournament in Douglasville. The girls were split into four teams Red 93s, Red, White, and Blue. In this tournament format, the U10 division played 6v6 for which the Red, White, and Blue team played in different divisions. All three teams competed very well and played some great soccer. The Red 93s played in the U11 division which was in an 8v8 format. The girls played some outstanding soccer dominating most of the play in all three games. There was some great attacking soccer from all the U10s this weekend! The U11 Academy spent this weekend at the TYSA Triumph Cup. The U11s were split into Red, White and Blue for the weekend with the Red team playing in the A division and both the White and Blue teams competing in the B division. The U11s played some great soccer as the Red team got to the final but just came up short 0-1, after a great run through their group. The White and Blue teams both got to the semi-finals, where the Blues lost a heart breaker in PKs. The Blues played outstanding but could not finish enough balls in regular time. Tough ending but great tournament for the Blues. The White team won their semi-final and went on to win the B division Championship. The White team scored some of the best goals of the weekend, created both by combination play and individual runs. This was definitely some of the best soccer played all year! Great season for both Academies. Great work by the kids and great job by the staff! As the fall ends, the spring is looking good for the girls program. Spring 2004 will once again see the Quest girls represented in the A division of every age group! Great job done this fall by all the players and the entire girls' staff. Week #11Quest Boys Rocks Raleigh: The boys select program sent 6 teams to the Raleigh Shootout during the weekend of November 15/16, and the results were spectacular. Three of the six teams made it to the finals! Best of all, the 15 and 17 Reds came away with championships. The 12's played well in patches, but lost all three. The 13's had two ties, which put them in the consolation game, which they won 2-0 over Concorde. The 14's also had two ties against strong opposition, and lost their last game 1-2 against the Richmond Kickers. The 15's breezed through their Elite A group play 3-0, then won the final on pks against a big, strong Leeds FC team from Pennsylvania. The 17's got through their Elite A group despite a 2-3 loss to the Houston Texans, and came through in the finals with a 2-0 win over the Dunston Dragons from Virginia. The 18's won their Elite C group with a 2-0-1 record, but lost in the finals 0-2 to the Dallas Comets. This is the best Quest showing in club history at this competitive event, and all the participants are to congratulated.
On the Athena side, the U11 girls Academy hosted the Knoxville Impact on Saturday. In two great games the Quest and Impact girls battled hard and played some very entertaining soccer. U10 QAA played a inter squad 4v4 tournament, in a great environment the 4v4 event went beautifully as the girls called their own fouls and set their own rules for the games. In the olders, the G91 Reds beat Tophat on Sunday morning in a dominating performance, which earned the G91 Reds a spot in the U12A division for the spring. G90 Reds continued to roll in the U13 B division winning two more games this past weekend, beating Freedom Bronze 2-1 and DC Starline 1-0. The G88 Whites secured another season in the U15 A division with a 5-0 win over Metro Navy on Saturday. In the U16 B division the G87 Whites finished up their season with a 3-0 win Saturday morning over Upson County. The G87 Reds won 1-0 on Saturday and 4-0 on Sunday. And in the U17 A division the G86 Reds won 2-1 to continue their undefeated run through the league. Finally the G85 Reds finished their R3PL season with a 7-2 record and currently sit in first place, which if it stands would secure their spot at Regionals next summer. Another great weekend of soccer! Week #10
In the olders, the G91 Whites finished up their U12 league play with a nice 1-0 victory over Atlanta Freedom. The G89 Whites soundly defeated RYSA Sporting FC 3-0 to pretty much solidify a spot in the U14 A Division for the spring 2004 season. The G89R team played some great soccer to win the Raleigh Shootout Champions division. Down 1-0 on a PK in the first game against CASL Elite, they scored with 13 minutes left to tie. The second game was a 3-0 win and the third game was the clincher as a win was needed to reach the finals. After battling 53 minutes with Texas Spirit Red, Quest scored with seven minutes left to send the G89R to the finals. With only 1 sub left due to injuries, the team played hard against Countryside Lightning in the final. Quest scored and Countryside answered with the game going to overtime and PKs. Making four out of five PKs and saving one, the G89R won it's first Raleigh Shootout Championship. In the Region Premier League the G85 Reds rebounded this week to beat the three time defending South Carolina State Champions Mt. Pleasant ICE 10 0. And then on Sunday played the number three team in SC Trident United and won handily 4-0. Another beautiful fall weekend of soccer! On the boys side, the 10 and 11 Academies finished up their fall season in style, with both programs traveling to Concorde for the season finale. Both squads played some brilliant soccer on the last weekend of play. In older boys action, most teams were done with their regular season, but there were a few big matches played. The 12 Whites won 4-1 at Roswell to finish 7-2 for the fall. The 14 Whites blew up on the Rapids 7-2 in a must win game, while the 16 Blues beat Dacula to move to 7-2-1 for the fall. The 17 Blues beat Rome Arsenal 3-1 and tied Athens 1-1. The 12 and 13 Reds were off, but the 14's finished up the fall as Classic I Champions with a record of 7-1-1, while the 15 Reds won 3-0 over SMSC in RPL play. The 17 Reds tied the U19 Norcross team, finishing up their remarkable fall with a league championship in U19 A-1 with a record of 9-0-2. Another fall goes in the record books. Next up is the Raleigh Shootout this coming weekend. We are sending six teams to this top level event. Good luck to all of them. Week #9Great soccer and great weather combined for another super soccer weekend for the United Quest. In boys Academy action, both the 10's and 11's hosted Cobb FC in some great matches. The goal of the weekend was scored by 8 year old Nicholas Arce on a diving header off a Will Porter cross in U10 Academy action spectacular! In select play the 12 Reds blew up on Columbus 6-0 to remain in fist place, and the 13 Reds got a crucial tie to stay in Classic I. The two biggest success stories of the weekend were the 14 Reds beating Metro North 3-1 to clinch first place in Classic I for the fall season, while the 17 Reds won 2-0 at Cobb FC and 10-3 at TYSA to remain in first place in U19 A-1. On the Athena side, the academies were at Cobb FC on Saturday. Tthe QAA10s played some great soccer while dominating 3 of 4 games with the Chiefs. The QAA11s also had a strong showing at Cobb FC having the run of play in all three games while maintaining a great level of play. On Sunday, the QAA11s were at home against the Cherokee Redwings for three matches. After some tough going early, the QAA11s got rolling and controlled all three games. The girls in the Academies have had a great fall and have been doing a great job at training as well as the games. Well done little ones! In the older girls, the G88 Whites got two good wins under their belt in U15 A. Saturday they were victorious against the Coweta Cannons 4-2 and Sunday they beat Norcross Blue 1-0. The G90 Reds continue their recent winning ways in U13 B beating the Henry Thunder 2-1 in a game that was not that close. The G87 Whites were victorious in their U16 B match 3-2. The G89 Whites posted a 3-1 record in U14 at the Top Gun Invitational in Pensacola. Quest defeated Mandeville (LA) Lakers 3-0, Wave FC (FL) 1-0 and Gulf Coast United (MS) 3-0, before dropping a 4-0 decision to NOSA (LA). Quest, Wave and NOSA all finished tied for first place with 3-1 records, but NOSA took the tourney title based on goal differential. Back in Georgia, the G89Rs dominated GSA in a battle for first place in the U14 A division on Canterbury 2 Saturday. Quest had one goal called back, while create dozens of chances but the game ended 0-0. The U12 White were finalists in the Top Gun Tournament in Pensacola this past weekend. We finished round robin play with a 1-1-1 record in our group of four teams. Defeating the Pensacola Wolves 2-0, playing to a draw with the Lightning Silver 0-0 and coming up short against the Mandeville Lakers from La., we advanced to the finals for a rematch with the Lakers. Having one hour less between our Sunday morning match and the championship game than the Lakers and having to switch venues, we ran out of gas in the second half and lost to a very good Lakers team 0-4. The girls played well and were deserving of their trophy. Finally, the last inter-club game of the season saw the G86 Reds and Whites compete in U17 A. In a hard fought game, the White team came up short, hobbled by numerous injuries, they played with one sub. G86 Reds played some great soccer at times and showed why they are in first place in the league. Another great weekend of Soccer!! Week #8Our lucky streak came to an end this weekend, as we finally had our first rain out of the season. All of the games on Sunday had to be postponed but at least Saturday was full of Quest action. In boys select soccer, both the 10 and 11 Academies had a great weekend at GSA. Three Red teams got good results to remain in first place of their divisions: the 12's got a big win over AFC, while the 14's tied Freedom, and the 17's beat Santos 3-1. The 16 Reds beat AFC 2-1, the 16 Whites won their second in a row 7-0 over Coweta. In recreational play, Saturday was a full day at the park, with lots of smiles and lots of goals. On the Athena side, rain postpones many games. For the first time this fall, we have been rained out. The Academies were about the only games that were played this weekend on the girls side at Quest. Both the U10s and U11s played host to GSA on Saturday and played some great soccer in very competitive games. In the older age groups, the G89 Reds continue their dominance of the U14 A division with another convincing 2-0 win with goals by Kristin Kranick and Erin Gaby. Hopefully this will be the only weekend where we cancel games due to weather this fall!! Good reports from California and the U19 National Camp with Quests G85 Red keeper Lynn Murray. Things are challenging for her but she is doing well and we will have a full report in next weeks' Whats the Good News from Lynn and hopefully from a full weekend of games. Mike Ferguson of TOPSocceer reports "We had our end of season party and had a blast. Everyone really enjoyed the season and everyone is coming back in the Spring. We have a ball signed by all the players and volunteers, that we would like to give the club showing our appreciation. Thanks for a great season!" Week #7Perfect weather and good soccer made for a great combination this past weekend, as the Quest players enjoyed some more fall league play. In Boys Academy action, both the 10's and 11's traveled to Metro North, where both groups did very well. In the older age groups, six teams had the weekend off, but the 16 Whites won 4-2 over Douglas County, while the 17 Blues beat AFC 4-1. Both the 14 Reds and the 17 Reds won big games to remain in first place, while the 12 Reds, 16 Reds, and 16 Blues all tied. In recreational play, there was a great U12 girls game between the Hustle and the Rampage, with the Hustle coming out on top. On the Athena side, beautiful weather made for some beautiful soccer this weekend! The Girls Academy had a full weekend with the U11s playing Friday at home against Cobb FC, at home again Saturday morning against the Metros, and Sunday afternoon away to face the Redwings. The U11 academy played some dominating soccer on all three days, having the run of play in all but one game all weekend. The U10s played and dominated the Metros as well on Saturday controlling the flow of the games and showing superior skills in all four games. Well done to both the 10s and 11s for another great weekend. In the older age groups, the G91 Reds had a goal fest in U12s at Henry County, coming out on top 5-4. The G91 Whites won 1-0 over the Cobb Y in a U12 game that saw lots of one way traffic in Quests favor. The G90 Reds blew up on the Cowetta Cannons in the U13 B division game winning 8-0 in a run away and the G88 White team went down to Tophat on Saturday for a U15A division match. After going down early 0-2, the G88 Whites fought back in the second half to tie and had chances to win but ended in a 2-2 tie. The big inter club match of the weekend took place in the U16 B division at Canterbury with the G87 Reds and G87 Whites. The G87 Reds played some beautiful soccer and dominated the first half of play gaining a 2-0 advantage. But the G87 Whites came storming back in the second half playing some great soccer themselves to tie the game up on a last minute free kick that hit the cross bar and came out, then was followed up nicely to end the match 2-2. Very exciting match. In the Region Premier League, the G85 Reds went to Florida with only 12 players (due to college official visits) to play the two top teams from Florida. The team put on an attacking clinic in game one against Florida Premier getting up 4-0 by half-time and then sitting back and knocking the ball around in the second half to save legs for the second game on Sunday morning. The Sunday morning game again saw an attacking game from the G85 Reds as they again came out on top 4-0. The G85 Reds have scored 16 goals and given up only one in four games in the RPL so far this fall as they sit with a record of 4 wins and no losses. Hands down the biggest girls soccer news at Quest this week has been Lynn Murray of the G85 Reds getting called into the U19 National Team training camp in Los Angeles. Summer '04 is the U19 Womens World Cup and Lynn is one of four keepers that will be battling to make the US U19 World Cup Team. Lynn Murray has received and committed to a full scholarship to play at the University of Wisconsin and will be studying Biochemical Engineering. Congrats Lynn! All your hard work both on and off the field has paid off! Also in consideration for the U19 National Team for the World Cup, is Elizabeth Jobe who has committed to Clemson on for a full scholarship and will be graduating from Roswell High school in December to start classes at Clemson in January. EJ has been with the US National Team program since she was 14. These are great rewards for two girls that have been playing soccer at Quest since they were 10 years old. Week #6The fall season is now past the half way point, and most of our teams are enjoying great success. The weekend of October 11-12 saw a bunch of great action. In Boys Academy play, the the 10's traveled to TYSA, while the 11's hosted Roswell. Both groups played some good soccer. The 12 Reds tied to remain unbeaten, while the 12 Whites won their sixth league game. The 16 Reds got two big wins, while the 14 Whites got their second win in a row. The two big stories of the weekend were the 14 Reds win over Roswell and the 17's win over Redwings, solidifying both teams first place status in league play. In recreational play, many thanks to the U8 Warriors and Coach Rictor, who helped out the club by filling our a scheduling glitch, playing both the Foxes and the Fury on Saturday. Both games saw some great soccer, with the Foxes really knocking it around. ToppSoccer had another great showing, and the U8 Academy had big numbers again as well. Congratulations to the 20 plus recreational goalkeepers who showed up for the just completed 'keeper clinics. Plans are in the works to expand these sessions in the spring. On the Athena side; the four Quest teams that traveled to Washington DC for the Wags event played some good soccer, and represented the club and themselves well but did not get very many good results. Back here in Georgia, the G89 Whites beat the Columbus Red Stars 3-1 in U14 A league play and the G91 Reds had a strong showing winning 5-2 in the U12 B league play. The Academies had the weekend off and resume playing Friday, Saturday and Sunday of this coming weekend. Last, but definitely not least, the G86 Whites traveled to Coco Beach, Florida and won the U18 division. Well done girls!
Week #5October 4/5 was a busy one for the Quest. The 10 and 11 Academies played host to AFC Lightning, and the level of soccer was very high. In other boy's news, the White teams had the run of play. The 13's got a big 5-1 win over the Roswell Santos; the 14's beat DDY 5-0; the 18's beat PTC Lasers 2-0; and the 17's won 4-2 to remain in first place of Classic II. The Red teams had some major victories as well. The biggest was our 12's 2-1 win over PTC Lasers to take over first place, while our 15's picked up two big wins in RPL play. The 14's and 17's were both off, but remained in first place of their respective divisions. The 19's beat Lanier 7-0 to move into a tie for first in A-II. In tournament play, the 17 Blues traveled to Jekyll Island, where they lost 0-1 in the finals to Stone Mountain. In recreational soccer, some great games were played. Among them, a U8 match between the Foxes and Bobcats. In U6, the Rhinos played the Jaguars in a great game (pictures below). See other U6 pictures in the Photo Gallery. On the Athena side, another beautiful weekend saw some more great soccer. The Quest Athena Academy had lots of fun and played some great soccer against Fayetteville Lightning on Sunday at the back of Noonday. The G91 Reds had 2 wins and 1 loss, while taking second place in the Nashville, TN at the Questfest. This weekend also saw the G85 Whites win the Norcross tournament in the U18 division, and the G86 Reds win another U17 A game 3-0, which makes the G86 Reds undefeated in league play. Some great soccer this weekend&ldots;and next off to WAGS this coming weekend (10/11, 10/12) for the G89 Reds, G88 Reds, G86 Reds, and the G85 Reds.
Week #4On the boys select side, September 27-28 was a dream weekend on the field. Both our 10 and 11 Academies played some great soccer, while our older age groups all got important points in league play. Our 12 Reds remained undefeated with a win and a tie, while our 13 Reds got two big wins. The 14 Reds beat Open Cup Champions AFC 2-1 to remain in first place of Classic I, and one of the players has provided a game summary from his point of view. (Read below) The 18 Reds got a huge win against Florida power Brandon Flames in RPL action. In all, no Red team lost, which is a pretty special scenario. On the girls side, we had another great weekend for soccer! Both the U10 and U11 Academies were at Concorde this weekend and had a great time while playing some beautiful soccer. The G91 Reds traveled to Coweta Cannons and came away with the 3 1 win. The G87 Reds controlled the game and beat the East Cobb Y 3-0. In the U13 age group the G90 Reds brought home a 1-0 victory. The G86 Reds went down to Lightning and won 1-0 under. The recreational side of things enjoyed another great weekend. One great game saw the the U8 Fury have a great game versus the Hawks. Everyone had a good time. We have had great attendance at the rec keeper clinics, and they have been extended through October 9. ToppSoccer enjoyed it's biggest week yet, with double the enrollment, and at least double the smiles! Ben's Game Recap:
Week #3September 20-21 was another great time for youth soccer. Good weather, perfect fields, and lots of soccer players working hard for their teams. On the boys select side, we sent three teams to the Soccer Classic in Greenville. All three teams made it to the finals. The 12 Whites had a great run, losing 3-1 to Rock Hill S.C. The 14 Whites lost to HFC's top team, while the 16 Whites went down in controversy 1-2 with two called back goals. Congratulations to all the teams on making it all the way to the championship match. The 10 and 11 Academies traveled to South West Cobb, where they had a great time and scored lots of goals. Perhaps the biggest win this weekend was the 14 Reds 2-1 defeat of perennial age-group powerhouse TYSA, with Samer Kaddah hitting the game winner on a pressure packed PK. On the Athena side, both the G91 Red and G91 White teams were successful this weekend winning 5-0 and 4-2 respectively. The G88 Whites went to the Soccer Classic (formally the Fall for Greenville) and played pretty well but did not advance out of their group. The G87 Reds had a great run at the same tournament, finishing with the second place hardware in the U16 A division. The G86 Reds continue to roll through the GYSA U17 A division winning 4-0 over Cobb FC on Saturday.
Week #2The highlights of the weekend of September 12-13 were many. On the recreational side, there were many good games, with one being the U12 Boys clash between the Silverbacks and the Sundogs. Played on plush Canterbury #6, both teams enjoyed the great environment. After a thrilling 0-0 first half, the Silverbacks managed 3 second half goals to come out on top. Also on the recreational side, the club has announced two 'keeper clinics to be held on September 18 and 25, from 6:30-7:30, on Canterbury #6. On the boys select side, the 12 Reds got their season off to a good start with a win against the Crew, and our 12 Whites played to a a 3-0 win vs. Concorde. The 15 Whites got their first win of the year in a 3-2 nail-biter vs. the Coweta Cannons. The 16 Blues went to 3-0 with wins over the Rapids and Arsenal. Both the 10 and 11 Academies hosted GSA, and everyone played hard and showed some good stuff. Perhaps the coolest happening over the weekend involved our 18 Reds. They traveled to Greenville, SC, on Saturday to play nationally ranked GFC. Although they lost 2-1, they were joined at their team dinner by Clemson seniors Grant Kevins and Steve Rhyne, two Quest alumni. The two college boys gave a presentation on the recruiting process, how they chose their college, and life as a college soccer player. Then, on Sunday, the team took in the Clemson vs Duke game, where Kevins started for the Tigers and helped lead them to an important 2-1 ACC win. Injured star Rhyne even got 4 of the 18's into the Clemson locker room for the half time talk! Much thanks goes out to Grant and Steve for their time and hospitality, and to Coach Adair for the tickets, and the opportunity to see what the next level is like, up close. On the Girls Athena side, the G86 Reds started the season in U17 A with two convincing wins of 6-0, and 4-2. The G85 White handled their opponent 5-0. The G90 Reds went to Nashville for a tournament and went undefeated in the top U13 division but failed to get to the final on goal difference. The G88W team went to Rockdale and came home with a 6-0 victory in the U15 A division and the G89 Reds had a strong start to their season winning 4-0 against Peachtree City. The Girls' Academy enjoyed a great day of competition at GSA where both the U11s and U10s played hard and had lots of fun! Week #1This week we finally kicked off the Recreational side of the Club with approximately 90 recreational games at the park over the weekend and another 5 games away from home involving our older Recreational players, who have an Inter-League schedule of home and away games. The recreational program is the heart of the Soccer Club and it is great to know we have almost 200 smidgets, 100 U6's and 250 U8's filling Canterbury 8 each weekend. (550 players at U8 and under is the biggest number we have ever accommodated.) Who knows, maybe we have a future National team player out there each weekend - and maybe we have a bunch of future academic, business and political leaders out there too! Canterbury 6 is the home of the U12 recreational games this year and with the cooperation of the weather it is good to see the whole park full of activity. Incidentally, we figure there were over 1000 goals scored in recreational play this weekend! As far as we know, all games were properly officiated and no red cards were reported. The new recreational uniform looked great and an informal observation was that everyone was "having a ball." The Recreational program only works because of so many volunteers - as commissioners, coaches, team "moms" etc. Thanks to all of you - from the kids and the Club. We owe our U8 people an apology. Their uniforms arrived late and were incorrectly sized - so we had to have our supplier reship, but it meant a late change on Saturday. Also, due to a scheduling mistake, we scheduled conflicts between the U6 and U8 games and had to hastily reschedule. We appreciate the patience of our U8 players and parents.
