Matt Troop named to the Top Drawer Soccer All-Rookie Third Team
|
|
University of Dayton men’s soccer goalkeeper, Matt Troop (United Quest 85 and formerly of Starr’s Mill HS) was named to the Top Drawer Soccer All-Rookie Third Team. The freshman net-minder posted a 1.15 goal against average (4th in the A-10). The Dayton Flyers started the season with a senior keeper in the net and had a dismal 0-3-1 record. Matt was quickly moved to the starting position and turned things around posting a 10-3-0 record. The Flyers finished second in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Top Drawer Soccer, online at www.topdrawersoccer.com, named its selections for the top three all-rookie teams and had Troop as the third-best rookie goalkeeper in the nation behind Taylor of Penn State and Edwards of Wake Forest. This was Troop’s third award of the season. After his first two starts, Troop was named to the Dayton Marriott Flyer All Tournament Team. Troop was selected to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie Team as seven of his ten wins came in league play.
Troop finished the year with two shutouts – on the road at Duquesne (A-10 Conference Champions) and at home against LaSalle. He also stonewalled Saint Joseph’s for 45 minutes before departing the game after aggravating an earlier injury. He gave up one goal or less in 10 of his 14 appearances.
Offensively, Troop got into the act with an assist against Fordham. His long punt was collected just 30 yards from the opponent’s goal by Omar Jarun (formerly of McIntosh HS). Jarun found a streaking Chris Rolfe (Kettering, OH), who scored the first goal of the eventual 4-1 victory.
The Flyers finished the season 11-7-2 overall and 8-3 in Atlantic 10 play.

Top Gun Champions!
|
|
With injuries and personal plans reducing our roster to 10 players four days from departure to Destin, Florida, it looked uncertain whether we would actually be attending the Top Gun tournament at all. Well, given a few days, great soccer weather, and three guest players later the girls found themselves playing for the tournament championship. On day one, the girls played the Lady Wolves from Pensecola Futbol Club beating them 1-0. Game two was even more impressive beating America SC by the score of 4-0. At the end of the day the girls would be tied with Wave Futbol Club with 7 pts each leaving it inevitable that we would play them in game three and in the Final. Game three was played on Sunday morning and as expected, this was the stiffest competetion yet with the game ending in a 0-0 tie. With games running late, there was only 1 1/2 hour between game three and the final. This seemed to be no factor however as the girls put on their best performance yet and dominated the match winning by the final score of 4-1! Play from the weekend was very consistant from all players with credit due in all areas of play. The defense was at its best only giving up one goal in four games, the midfield was also dominant keeping the pressure on the offensive side of the field for the majority of all four games and offensively, goals were scored by five different players. Our sincere thanks goes out to Summer, Britt, and Julia, our guest players from Arsenal Rome. Congratulations Silverbacks!

Stinson, Hallberg Named
to ACC All-Freshman Team
Ashley Stinson is ACC Freshman of the Year
|
|
November 1, 2004
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech's Ashley Stinson was named the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year Monday afternoon.
Tech placed two players on the women's soccer 2004 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Freshmen Team. Freshmen Heather Hallberg was named to the team along with Stinson.
In her first season, Stinson set Tech single-season school records for goals (17), points (39), shots (75) and consecutive games with at least one-point (8). The forward from Acworth, Ga., is the ACC leader in shots per game, points per game and goals per game, while ranking second with five game-winning goals in 2004.
Stinson is the first player ever to be named a conference Freshman of the Year in Virginia Tech women's soccer history.
Hallberg, a native of Richmond, Va., has started in all 17 games she has played this season. The midfielder is second on the team in goals scored (4) and third in assists (4). She also has one game-winning goal, scoring in the 50th minute to lead the Hokies over Wake Forest by a 3-2 score.
"We are so proud and honored to have Ashley named Freshman of the Year and Heather to the All-Freshman team," said head coach Kelly Cagle. "Ashley is one of the best finishers in the conference, but most of her goals have been assisted, which speaks volumes for the team. Both are deserving from an individual standpoint, but also from the team aspect as well."
The Hokies will play intra-state rival Virginia on Wednesday, Nov. 3, in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament at noon in Cary, N.C.

DID YOU HEAR? Cobb soccer team gets fiery scare on Texas trip
Friday, June 25, 2004 Austin American Statesman
The Silverbacks @ United Quest Red U17B State Champs lost all their personal/team equipment and uniforms in a bus fire on their way to Southern Regionals in Austin, TX. The fire completely destroyed the bus in Louisiana near the Texas border at approximately 4 am Thursday. While most of the riders were asleep on the moving bus at the time, all were successfully evacuated and no one was injured. To assist the team, players and families in replacing their gear and uniforms before the start of the season, JustSoccer has organized a donation drive. JustSoccer will match the first $1000 in donations for this cause. YOUR HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!
Steve Humburg/JustSoccer stated "Soccer is a great investment for building youth character development, now and in the future. Proper gear and equipment is a part of that investment in our children, too. I feel for the players and families of this team to have a total loss of, not just the soccer gear, but street clothes...everything! JustSoccer felt the need to help in our area of expertise. Fortunately, no one was hurt as we can at least help replace the items lost and, also fortunately, this is a very tight soccer community. I believe the community will want to help, too."

of the Atlanta Silverbacks Foundation and the Silverbacks Soccer
Club. A celebration of this exciting merger has been planned for June
19th at the Atlanta Silverbacks game. This will be the first time in
the United States that several youth soccer clubs have truly merged
all of their programs from Recreation to Select with a professional

2004 Volunteer and Scholarship Awards
The 2004 Scholarship Awards were presented on May 29 at the annual
Canterbury Cup Memorial Service, which honors two former Quest
players. This year, the Cliff Cruce Award, given to a current high
school junior, was presented to Jon Wangrin. Jon is one of the
captains of our 17 Reds, who are ranked 17th nationally. He has
refereed, worked camp, and helped out with various tasks at the park.
His strong work ethic and passion for the game were primary reasons
for his selection.
The Matt Dufrense Award, given to a graduating senior, was presented
to Kali Neumann. She has been a member of the 85 Reds since the U-9
days, and has won 4 State Championships with the Quest. In addition,
she has refereed, been a summer camp staff member, and worked in the
Athena Academy as well. She will be attending the University of South
Carolina on a soccer scholarship this fall. Congratulations to both
of these fine young adults.

Past updates regarding the merger can now be found at this link
