17 Reds Travel to College Showcase

The Boys 17 Reds traveled to The Cincinnati Blue Chip Showcase April 23-25, and performed well in front of over 300 college coaches. The first game matched the Quest against the Oakville Strikers, the top rated team in Canada. Oakville went up 1-0 midway through the first half, but Jon Cox equalized for the Quest with a 30 yard missile moments later. Quest gave up a soft goal off a counter attack right before half to go down 2-1 at the break. The second half saw one way traffic as the Quest pushed for the equalizer. Sammy Siasia, Jeff Cox, and Sean Brooks all came close, but Eza Chamarro final made it 2-2 with a slalom run through the box. Most college coaches agreed it was one of the best games of the weekend, and Quest's strong second half impressed many. The second match had the Quest pitted against the Chicago Magic, ranked 17th in the country. A miscue led to a gift goal for an early Magic lead. That goal made the Quest chase the game for the most part, but a Jon Wangrin thumping header with 10 minutes left salvaged a tie for the 17 Reds. The Showcase was rained out on Sunday, but those two ties put the Quest as one of the only undefeated teams in the event. Congratulations to all the participants.

Lightning Tournament

The United Quest boys teams did well in the AFC tournament on March 20-21. The u11 Academy put Team Boca in the event, and they responded by going all the way to the finals...where they lost in a penalty kick shootout.
The same fate was in store for our 14 Reds. After winning their group play and the semis, they lost in another penalty kick shootout to a good team from south Florida.
Our 12 Reds and Whites also had a great weekend, with both teams advancing all the way to the final....against each other! The Reds prevailed 3-0 in a great match.

Tournament News

The Cobb Classic on February 21-22 provided the 10 and 11 Boys Academies to kick off the rust and get the season started in fine form. All the boys displayed moments of brilliance! Pictured right is the U11 Adidas team. Good start, everyone.

CGSA Savannah Cup The Boys U14 Whites, coached by Mark Rogers, got their spring season off to a great start by winning the Savannah tournament held January 31- February 1. They won the final 2-0 over North Mecklenburg, after going undefeated in group play. Congratulations team!

Quest U-18 Boys State Cup Finalists

The United Quest 18 Reds boys team finished up their youth soccer careers with a hard fought, 2-1 loss to the Concorde Fire on Sunday in the Open Cup finals. Going into the game, the Fire was four time defending state champion, and three time regional champion as well. Quest beat AUSA 4-1 in the semifinals on Saturday, setting up what was supposed to be a mismatch with Fire in the finals.
Just like the girls game before them, the boys championship was played in driving rain with strong winds. Fire won the toss and was able to score two goals in the first half with the wind. Quest hit the crossbar and had a lot of the play.
The second half was one way traffic for the Quest, as Steven Daniels forced a great diving save by the Fire keeper. Fire was unable to get the ball out of their half for long periods of time, and you could feel the Quest goal coming.
After constant pressure, Brendan Tolleson scored off a scramble in front of the goal off a corner kick. Quest came close to the equalizer three more times, but was unable to score before time ran out. Congratulations to this team for their great run through state cup and a great finale to their last year.

Boys Teams Do Well In Tampa Bay Sun Bowl

The U14 through U19 boys Red teams traveled to the Tampa Bay area for the Dec 26-30 Tampa Bay Sun Bowl. Many of the teams turned in strong performances.

The 14's and 15's played some tough competition. Both went 0-2-2 and did not advance out of their groups.

The 16's, 17's, and 18's were all knocked out by the eventual tournament champions. The 16's beat TC United (Cincinnati, Ohio) 4-0 and Lakeland Lasers, Florida 5-2, but lost to the eventual champs Houston Texans 1-3.

The 18's went undefeated, beating a tough St. Louis team 2-1 and HOTA from New York 2-1, while they tied Region II champs (and eventual Sun Bowl winners) Ohio Premier 0-0, as well as the St Pete Surf 2-2. Ohio knocked the 18's out on points, as both teams were 2-0-2.

Above: Johnny Wangrin, of the U17 team, scores the winning goal in the quarterfinals against Concorde-Fire.

The club's best run was made by the 17 Reds, who won their group with wins over Dallas Inter, Texas (1-0), Temple Terrace, Florida (4-1), Internationals from Louisville, Kentucky (4-1), and World Class from New Jersey (2-1). Those results earned them a quarter-final showdown vs. Concorde Fire, where Johnny Wangrin's goal stood up for a big 1-0 win. That led to a semi final matchup with Charlotte Soccer Club, who ended the Quest's tournament with a 4-1 defeat.

Congratulations to all the teams for a great fall season and a solid Sun Bowl.

Atlanta Cup

Labor day weekend was a busy time for most Quest teams. The 18 Reds went 2-1 in group play, but were beaten by eventual champion Reston FC (Va). Four teams made it to the semifinals. The 12's and 17's Red's both lost in the semis, while the 15's and 19's both lost in the finals. Congratulations to all players who competed in this increasingly competitive tournament.

August Tournaments

The weekend of August 23-24 was another successful one for the Quest. Three boys' teams won titles in the Metro North tournament, while another won the Aiken Cup in South Carolina. The 16 Reds won the "A" Division of the Metro tourney, highlighted by a 2-1 win in the final over TFC Vipers. The club "swept" the age group, with the 16 Whites wining the "B" bracket. The 18 Whites won the U18/19 "B" Division with a 2-1 victory over the Roswell Santos.

The 17 Reds traveled to Aiken, S.C., where they went undefeated on their way to the finals. Since that match was rained out, they were declared the champions on points due to their 3-0 semi-final win over Aiken United.

Capital Cup Report

The boys 17 and 18 Reds traveled to Washington, D.C. August 9-11 to compete in the Capital Cup College Showcase, one of the top youth tournaments in the eastern US. The 17's had a great showing, outscoring opponents 16-8, and winning three games. Unfortunately, they lost to the Maryland State Champions Bethesda Internationals in group play, so they did not advance. The 18's had an exciting weekend, highlighted by a 3-0 win over Eastern Pennsylvania's State Champions Beadling FC, which helped land the Quest a semi-final berth. There, they lost to the eventual champions Norcross Fury 2-1 in extra time. Congratulations to both teams on their strong beginning to the new season.

Boys Travel To San Diego Surf Cup

Two Quest boys teams traveled to California for the prestigious Surf Cup July 24-28, and both teams played some memorable games. The 14 Reds started out with a tough loss to SSD Aztecs 0-2, and managed a goal in a 1-2 loss to the Dallas Texans. In their final game they faced one of the best U14 teams in the country, the La Jolla Nomads, and came out with a 0-1 loss, with 'keeper Billy Noojin making several spectacular saves. The 15 Reds tied the nation's top rated team, Solar from Dallas, 1-1 in their first game. Ben Mello scored the goal. They dropped their next match to San Francisco 0-1, but bounced back to beat the state champions from Iowa 3-2. They did not advance. All of these scores were quite respectable, as Surf Cup participants are traditionally some of the best in the United States. Both teams are to be congratulated for their excellent showing.
